Women have long known the importance of performing at-home breast exams, but a new device might help them spot a lump even earlier.
Developed in the U.K., the Breastlight is a handheld tool that shines a powerful but harmless red light through breast tissue so that women can see what's going on underneath the skin.
"You can see right through your breasts, see any of the veins and arteries that are in there but it gives you the ability to see any dark spots or shadows, which can indicate a problem that you can bring to your doctor's attention," notes Tracey Phillips of Rexall Pharmacy, where the product is sold.
Those behind the product say it's not supposed to replace a mammogram screening, but may help women develop a heightened sense of what's going on in their breasts.
Breastlight retails for Cdn$150.
